2nd XI beat Harting

An imperious Dools 100 is backed up by a strong team display

MATCH REPORT

The Twos got off to a good start against the visitors, Harting, losing the toss and being put to field first. Skip for the day Nittur Senior set the field and the bowling order (Beckett was having a non-cricketing weekend, and the field was certainly quieter!) and Josh Flen was lined up to open the bowling.

A few near misses off the fast opening bowlers ensued where the ball whistled pass the stumps and the Wood were unlucky not to sneak a couple of early wickets. As the opening batters bedded in for the afternoon, Nittur limbered up from outfield to take over bowling in the 13th over, with the no. 2 batter's wicket falling from the last ball of the over with a catch from Pickup, which was never in doubt. Will Flen made himself useful in the field, despite taking a quick ball to his knee but came back strongly once he had walked it off. The Wood, buoyed by the first wicket, kept the work rate up, and an epic fumble between Kent at wicket keeper and Cooley Snr at slip resulted in another catch off Royds Jnr's bowling ending 20 overs on 76 - 2.

The drinks break gave Nittur a chance to rally the troops for the second half of the Harting innings with 3rd wicket falling on the 26th over with a glorious catch on the top boundary by Horan who covered a huge amount of ground to make it. With the score 95-3, the new batters set up a solid pairing where the boundary was put to regular use. There were a couple of spectacular saves by Flen Snr, who fancied a little lie down during the fielding set more than once. Twyford's wicket moment came with his quick hands catching off Cooley Snr's bowling. This saw off the visitors' top run scorer of the day and slowed the run rate down considerably. Will Flen then took to the bowlers crease for his debut bowl for the Wood Twos on the 39th over. Amazingly, he took a smashing wicket on his first ball and provided a catch for Dools who was on the boundary concentrating on not getting out on his first ball as we neared the halfway point.

The final over was another fantastic fumble between club stalwarts Kent and Cooley where Kent, with his hands strategically placed on the bowlers side of the wicket, caught a Cooley ball which beat the batter and was bang on middle stump. They kissed and made up afterwards, though so all is well once more.

The innings finished with Harting on 192-6 - a decent target for the home boys who were feeling ready for the task at hand.

Pickup and Dools took to the wicket as the game resumed and set off strongly, notching up a strong 49 off the first 10 overs putting the home team just ahead of the run rate. However, Pickup was unfortunately caught behind and was out for 16. Horan, feeling energised, looked ready to add to the run count, and promptly aimed a boundary ball at the scorers to make sure they were awake. The boundaries kept coming for Dools and Horan - Dools was getting quite excited at this point as he neared his ton and executed some sublime batting until Horan was caught out for 22 which gave Royds Jnr. a chance to enter the frame. A great boundary off his first ball added to the total and some nifty running between the stumps kept the board ticking. However, Dools, after hitting his century, was stumped and out for a hefty 112. Twyford entered the frame, looking comfortable and hitting the ball with apparent ease however it was over for Royds when he was caught in the gully for 23.

Will Flen, feeling great after his fielding endeavours, and with 3 runs to bag came on with confidence and bagged the final winning runs of his first two balls which delighted his mum.

A great game and a comfortable win against bottom of the table Harting, ending 193-4 off 33 overs, so room to spare. Well done Wood!
